I'm sick of the Blame

Seeing that I'm bored at work, I decide to write about an issue that Hip Hop (and the black community, but for my purpose mainly Hip Hop) has, that's Blame. Someone is always blaming someone or something on the issues. Although I can go on for day about what Hip Hopper and their fans love to blame things on, I will manly focus on what is suspected to have assassinated Hip Hop... The majors. Not only the majors but the greedy corporate Americans, or the TI's (Tall Israelis) or whomever you want to call them as well as the Radio and MTV and other media outlets.

I have a problem with this because I'm in school for selling people crap the wouldn't want without seeing something shiny or a half naked girl on a poster and also because I need something to hate on for today.

People(meaning the 3 people who actually visit this blog) don't you understand no one is to blame but yourselves. It is you the fans who allowed MTV to just be TV, it is you who allow the radio to play crap-ass music (sidenote: I'm glad WAMO was sold, they played it safe and got screwed anyway). All people need to do is make a stand. We loved Room Raiders more than TRL, we still called in to the local radio and request songs on our instead of complaining. We did this as fans. We as fans also let good music go unnoticed. We buy out of ignorance. We by Gucci for the brand name and because our favorite rapper said it or we seen him with it. That ignorance is carried over into our music buying. We by Jay because of the name brand, we by Wayne because of the brand and we see everyone else with it. But when Sandtogold first dropped her CD she wasn't cool enough so we casted her to the side until she got a co-sign from Jay... Which is just a collab effort between brands. This sickens me because we blame the radio for not playing good music but yet when we call into the radio we ask for "Swag Surfing" instead of some Mof Def. Its okay though we as hip hop listeners are some of the most uneducated bunch in the country so how can I expect anything different.

Don't worry, the Hip Hoppers did this as "artist" too. The Majors been playing ball like this since the beginning of time (I assume). Diddy been rapeing his talents(meaning artists) and Atlantic has always shoved pop down our throats. Where Hip Hop became a victim is when "Rappers" start being about the money being blinded by the Zeros. Alittle shopping around contracts or education would allow an "artist" to see that some or most contracts he does not have full creative control over what he makes. Thus making him a corporate bitch. And I refuse to feel sympathy to a person who allows them self to be someone elses bitch then complain about it later. Rappers it is their fault that they have a bunch of pop sounding trash that they say the "label made them create" which to me sounds like I don't have creative control over my music because I'm an idiot. Another blame game is "I was not marketed right" or "I had no marketing push" which to me means, hey maybe I shouldn't have signed onto some other rappers label, because no that I think about it, were in completion with each other. Also if an "artist" has no marketing push, why don't they come out of pocket and wait to buy that $100,000 blue diamond chain (it may just be me but I've never seen a raw uncut colored diamond).

I can't stand to hear someone complain and blame the state of music on the radio or the majors, considering that we are the only genre where this is an issue maybe that's because this is the only genre centered at the black community.

But this is just the opinionated mind of a music menace...

See I was not gonna post anything on here until I posted a new Kelvin track, but seeing as he's moving very slow(no shots) and its been a good month since my last post(and I'm bored at work) I decided to come out of hiatus. Charles Hamilton is one of the many people I love to hate on. But then again if you have two feet and are able to talk I will probably hate on you too. But anyway Tails as I like to call him recently named Jay Dilla Executive producer of his 12track LP, yes only 12.

Well the problem is JayDee is dead and has been for a couple of years now. And I guess because Dilla is dead people are going all ape shit over how he could have been named EP of his LP. Well guess what guys EP's don't really do shit when it comes to an actual LPs. Like in movies EPs are the people who fund the project or discovered the artist. Usually EPs are Label exe's. Which acounts for the E in EP. (Jay Z EPed Food and Liquor and Jay didn't do anything but offer Lupe a deal which made Lupes stock raise). Granted I am NOT in the music industry so I don't really have any clout when it comes to stuff like this.

In any case if you listen to Charles Hamiltons sound and style and beat selection or creation, he picks or creates sounds similar to Jay Dees all over, kinda "Sloppy" esc style. So why not EP him. I read on allhiphop he is also putting money in Ma Dukes pocket because he's giving him a point(I'm assuming that's what a point is) then I don't see what the problem is. People get verses from the dead Tupac and Biggie and dillas beats are getting raped for no profit by other people. I'm assuming that he had to get permission from someone in Dillas fam to use his name so if their cool why can't you DETRIOT and rest of the world. I know none of yall are putting money in his fam pockets.

A lot of tracks from Detox are recently leaking with T.I. either ghostwriting and referencing or hired just to reference (which I fail to believe he is just referencing because other artist such as Game, Xzibit, or Bishop Lamont sound more like Dre and would serve as a better reference artist). So it came to my attention that if T.I. is capable of songs like this, why would he make songs like this, or this?

The obvious answer is to sell records but when TIP first came in the game with I'm Serious or even Trap Muzik he was hard body and everyone loved it(or over a million people loved it). But his last LP played like that of Curtis with all this Pop music. Is this what the music industry became; a place were crossover records; by way of lost of artistic integrity, and hardcore fans is the only way to sell millions. Wayne definitely thought so. Here I though T.I. fell off, lost a step ran out of rhymes or whatever have you; but NO he just wants to push units like he supposedly did coke. I don't know whether to be excited one of my favorite rappers still can rhyme with the elite or upset that he's selling out for sake of the possibility of selling a couple thousand more records.

This is the problem with Hip Hop now, to many artist want to sell records but few want to make actual good music. This causes more die hard real Hip Hop fans to go underground like Master Splinter. Slaughterhouse, Drake(although becoming more Wayne like by the day), Jay Electronica, Mickey Factz, Blu, and Evidence, have become my G-Unit, Lil Wayne, Jay Z, Common, Snoop, and T.I. I have no problem with these new leaders of the new school, but what happens when they make it big time, which I pray doesn't happen because then I will again have to look for a new group of starving artists.

If T.I. is any indication of what the mainstream superstar psychy is then this game is all fucked up. Pop, Rock, and Jazz artists rarely ever try just to sell records. Most of the time Rock Albums only come out once every other year or may even take longer because they want to make sure they put out the best product possible. Maybe that is the reason so many of the groups from the 70's and 80's are still relevant... Maybe it isn't the fault of the Hip Hop "artists" maybe the blame should be placed on the record companies for making the bottom line the dollar or the producers for crafting songs where 30% of what they get AFTER the Label, has to go to the Sampled artists. Who knows... But what I do know that if T.I. and other artists bring that real shit more they might get my attention again.

Can you please give people a run-down about yourself? How did you earn the nickname “Downtown’s Sweetheart”?

My name is Vashtie. I am a director, designer and party promoter (1992 with OSCAR / OPEN with Q TIP). I was born and raised in Albany, New York as the youngest of three children. My parents are working class immigrants from Trinidad. I moved to New York City to attend art school at SVA and to ultimately pursue all my dreams. I recently left my position at Island Def Jam as Director of Creative Services to work for myself. Last season I launched my brand VIOLETTE.

“Downtown’s Sweetheart” started off as a joke. A friend of mine refused to walk with me to a store in Soho. He said “I don’t have time, you’re going to run into too many people you know and it will take us hours. You know everyone, you’re like Downtown’s Sweetheart or something.” I adopted it because I thought it was funny and it just stuck. I have many affiliations so it made sense. It’s a funny play on America’s Sweetheart, although I represent a different area.

What inspired you to create and launch your clothing label Violette?

As a kid I was always drawing and making stuff. I got into designing and making my own pieces when I was around 12, I originally wanted to study fashion. Then I got really into film and music videos and decided to head in that direction, because I figured I could still do fashion on the side. Throughout high school and college I worked retail. In 2000, I was working at Stussy and the urge to make clothing re-surfaced and I started designing and screening my own shirts. It came about because there were so many things at that time that were not available, it was before this whole “streetwear” explosion happened. As a girl who dresses boyish, I could never find tees I wanted in my size and I really loved all the boy brands. I had been getting my Supreme tees altered by my tailor so they could fit me. Girl brands just never appealed to me. They say “necessity is the mother of invention” and well, I needed an option.

How has your strong network of peers helped you achieve your goals?

In film-making and parties, my peers are huge helpers. Either by supporting at the events or working on set. Just having people around helps. Especially with film-making. It’s a team effort and you need a solid crew and extra helping hands. It’s important to have a community of people who support you.
As far as the brand, I’ve been doing it on my own…designing, printing, funding, sales, marketing, etc. I had a couple of investor options, but I wanted to learn every aspect and be able to say I did it on my own (at least in the beginning). There are no secret cooks in the kitchen and it’s definitely been more stressful that way, but it’s a learning process. I’ve had a couple of good friends help with organizing and the laborious moments, without them I would have gone crazy!
I’ve gotten a lot of advice from friends in the game; Kunle/Irak, Scott/Pegleg, Loic/BBC, Erin/MadeMe, but it came down to trial and error for me. James Jebbia gave me great advice, he said “take your time” and I did. Ha, It took me 8 years to finally launch a brand.

How does fashion differ from other creative mediums such as music-making or video directing?

Well, video directing almost always involves other parties…for example the record label, the artist, etc. The original ideas can get lost in a tug of war between everyone involved. It’s a struggle and you have to learn how to bargain with people. That’s the story with commercial art everywhere, it becomes a forum. Fashion (now) has been purer because I have no one to answer to but myself. I’m making all the things I like and it’s almost limitless. That may change as time goes on, but I think it will always be more independent than others.

What are the inspirations behind your debut collection?

Really the brand reflects me and my style, tom-boyish and fashion forward. I’ve always been opposed to super feminine themes and I never wanted my brand to scream, “I’m a Girl”. It’s obvious I’m a girl, I don’t need a t-shirt to tell people that. What isn’t obvious are the things I may like or dislike, the opinions I have. Also, because the designs were so “neutral” I decided on a making a line of t-shirts for the fellas, VIOLETTE HOMME.

I focused a lot on the branding of VIOLETTE with the use of logos. I wanted it to feel like an old brand and I tried to keep the designs classic and simple – that’s something that will be found in every season. I played with sarcasm and irony with a couple shirts just for fun.

For instance the KILL FOR PEACE tee was an inspiration from a World War I jacket that had buttons with that message branded on it. The irony and boldness of that statement was so great, it started to be humorous. The idea of killing for peace was such a strange concept, then again – in some dire situations it becomes a possible solution.

I also like things that serve a purpose and hold a message. Some of the tees have commentary. The EFF YOU tee was designed when I was working at NIKE ID in 2005. It was such an old design, but it really explained how my peers and I felt about the scene. From working retail in 2000 at Stussy, we saw how the sneaker/streetwear game just exploded. It became so massive that everyone was the same, there was nothing different or new. Everyone talking about what kicks they had, what line they were starting, etc. It was so boring and I know Hypebeast readers can relate to it. If you truly love something you can, at times, hate it. I’m not excluding myself because I am apart of that world, so I added the “F*@K VIOLETTE”.

Also, if you notice, there is a heart on the sleeve on the shirts. I wanted to really brand that, “wearing your heart on your sleeve” idea. As someone who is strong, tough and can hold my own… I can also wear my heart on my sleeve amongst the people closest to me. It’s not an accepted way of living, but I appreciate it because it’s honest. We as a people get caught up in “acting” a part, afraid of people seeing the real you. Obviously, you can’t leave yourself open for hurt, but I find beauty in someone who isn’t afraid of showing how they truly feel.

This goes to show that unconscious rappers can not make conscious or meaningful rap songs in the climate of today. But what else this shows is that people, listeners, fans; will accept any half thought out verse from their favorite, perhaps everyone favorite MC. Come on people if we don’t call Jay on this BS then imagine what Blueprint 3 will consist of? And don’t blame him went he drops another Kingdom Come only blame yourselves because you all let him get away with it this time. It is human nature to give the bare minimum when you know people will accept it with open arms.

XXL had good blogs today, where they addressed Lyricism in rap and even someone else breakdown of this exact same verse (thanks for the inspiration).

I wish someone with a mind and still has unconditional love for this thing once known as Hip Hop. I am now dreaming of the day Lupe, 3000, Common or even Em jump on something similar (although Common’s Changes does shine some light on it, although made before the election). But hey I can’t blame Jay entirely, he is on a Jeezy song and the average Jeezy fanboy doesn’t know desert from desert (think about it, there called heteronyms). Jay may have needed to dumb himself down but that still doesn’t take away from the fact he needs to redeem himself.

Here I introduce to you Ant. I actually met him on a hip hop message board a few years back. Since then we became really good friends and share the same interest in art tho he isn't a Warhol fan such as myself lol. Don't get it twisted tho Ant is an artist himself a very talented gfx designer might I add. Since day one I became a fan of his. And to be there for his progression over the years is something I'm very grateful of.

I was searching the inter web for some new Zshares and I came across a couple reviews of Kanye West’s 808’s & Heartbreaks and one thing that stuck out to me in the review and in the comment sections is that a lot of people are calling this a GOOD, and dare I say CLASSIC album. WHY because it’s different and when a cboy disagrees he is labeled as closed minded and not being a fan of music; because according to these deaf band wagoners this is not Hip Hop it is good Music. The One thing that came to my mind is BULLSHIT; this is good music to people who don’t know good music. This is good music to people who first heard Paper Planes when rappers jumped there broke asses on it, this is music to people who think Lil’ Wayne’s last album was classic. This is good music to people who don’t know shit let alone good music. And Damn why didn’t Common get that defense on Electric Circus that was better than 808’s and that didn’t get called good music

I personally listen to real music my Windows Media Player is filled with more genres than Kanye has skinny jeans, and shutter shades combined, so don’t put me in that category of not knowing music. I love College Dropout, Late Registration was good, Graduation was cool, and I just like to forget 808’s was every released.
Although I did not hear the whole 808’s I’ve heard all the leaks which are 10 of the 12, and that is enough to know when I hear a LP not even worth my Dell’s 80mb’s; cause that’s space that a Asian being power drove could occupy. Kanye reasoning for sucking T-Pain’s plastic voice pipe is because he went through to much and he had to let his emotions out. Well there is another way of doing this besides stealing two swags (what up Kid Cudi, sorry another “rapper” signed you just to run with your style, good look on the ghostwriting for him too), maybe Song Cry and most of DMX’s songs(that man cries on stage tell me that isn’t emotional songs). These are personal and Hip Hop, so don’t say it’s not possible. Also if it was supposed to be filled with emotions why would he put features on something that is supposed to be for HIS losses, after hearing 808’s I should want to cry not blog about how overrated the album is(If any one person was close to shedding a tear I may renege).

Anyway the reviewers who reviewed this have been reviewing “Hip Hop” or “Rap” only, so when something different comes there way they don’t know how to come about it. They don’t know real music so they think that if they call it real music no one will catch them on it, well I did. But maybe that’s not it, maybe the only people who could get advances are people who sold their soul and integrity to give the GOOD music head a good rating(what up Star Track). I can not wait until Okayplayer and Rolling Stones post some real journalism. Anyway the moral of the story is stop coat tailing, and listen to real music before you call something real music.

P.S. Does Kanye have this much juice that he puts out crap and it still gets labeled good, damn Jay(Kingdom Come) you couldn’t even do that, I guess little brothers about to son you.

In today's society our youth lack respect, mannerism, & adequacy
Don't get me wrong its cool to use slang when its appropriate
But for the most part when your in the public eye one should
present himself as a "Gentlemen" after viewing a FEW pages of John Bridges' "How To Be A Gentlemen"
I've came to the conclusion that every young man should own this book.
Mind you a portion of this book is common sense.
BUT there comes a time in every mans life where his mother is
no longer around to give him guidance.
This book is an perfect example of an handy guide for a contemporary
gentlemen.
